Team messaging

Team messaging brings together in strivn what used to go through WhatsApp: the whole-team channel, one channel per event and private conversations. Messages can carry your data (call-up, week, results, exercises, tactical boards…), which stays up to date, and you can see who has read them. Open Messages in the team menu; the number of unread messages is shown next to it.

The Conversations list is split into three groups:

GroupWho is in it
TeamThe Team channel: staff, players and parents of minors. The Staff channel: the staff only, players and parents don’t see it.
EventsOne channel per event: the players called up, their parents and the staff. It opens when the first call-up is sent and is archived once the event is over.
Private conversationsThe people you chose. Every member sees who is in it.

A conversation’s Members button lists its members under Staff, Players and Parents, each marked Has the app or No app. A player who isn’t called up follows an event’s channel Read only. For a minor, No parent linked or Parent not activated yet flags that a parent is missing.

  1. In Messages, click New conversation.
  2. Pick the staff members and players of the team (Search for a member filters the list).
  3. Give it a name if you like (Conversation name (optional)), then click Create the conversation.

If a conversation with the same people already exists, strivn reopens it instead of creating a second one.

By default, a player can only open a private conversation with the staff. To let players talk privately to each other, turn on Settings → Messaging → Let players talk privately, without the staff. Whether it is on or not, a minor is never in a private conversation between players.

Type in the field at the bottom, then Send. You can:

  • attach a photo or a PDF (JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC or PDF, 15 MB at most);
  • add a block from strivn (see below);
  • tick Read confirmation: each member confirms with one tap (I’ve read it), and you can nudge those who haven’t;
  • tick Important: the message is highlighted and also sent by email to every member of the conversation.

Writing in the Team channel and in event channels requires the Post in channels permission, which the coaching roles have by default (see Permissions).

On a computer, hover over a message: a bar appears in its corner, with your three latest emoji and Add reaction, which opens about fifty emoji grouped under Recent, Gestures, Faces, Symbols and Sport, the last with your team’s sport emoji (⚽ 🥅 for football and futsal, 🤾 🥅 for handball, 🏀 for basketball, 🏐 for volleyball, 🏉 for rugby). On a phone, tap Message actions (⋯): the emoji open at the bottom of the screen, with the list of who reacted. Everyone has one reaction per message: another emoji replaces yours, the same one takes it back. Reactions show under the message with their count; clicking one reacts the same way, the button after them opens the emoji, and on a computer, hovering over a reaction shows who gave it. Reacting takes the same right as writing in the conversation, and sends no notification.

Add a block opens the list of strivn blocks, grouped by topic: Schedule and squad, Results and stats, Opponent, Training, One player and Documents. A message carries four blocks at most.

Example blocksWhat they show
Call-upThe session or match, and who has replied; players reply from the message
Week calendarThe week’s sessions and matches (This week or Next week)
Squad, availabilityThe squad or the players called up with their faces, who is available
Results, scorers, playing timeW/D/L record, score, scorers, minutes per player
OpponentWhat you know about the opponent, their players, our past meetings
Exercise, Exercise video, tactical boardA sheet from your library, a video that plays in the thread, one of your boards
VideoA YouTube, Vimeo or other link
Report, Presentation, Free pageA link to a saved report, a presentation or an assistant page
A player’s test results, A player’s wellnessTheir latest tests, their last 14 check-ins

Each block is either Live (it updates inside the message) or Frozen (it keeps the figures from the day it was sent, with a link to the latest version). Preview shows the result before sending.

Some blocks don’t go everywhere. Blocks about a single player can only be posted in a private conversation with that player (and their parents if they are a minor); wellness also needs the parents’ consent for a minor. A block whose data you don’t have isn’t offered. The list sets aside what is Not available here.

An exercise, a tactical board, a video or an image opens full size when you tap it: Enlarge, or Play full size for a video and an animated tactical board, which play in the enlarged view. Close goes back to the thread.

Under your messages, strivn shows Seen 14/18 and, with a read confirmation, Confirmed 12/18.

  1. Click Who has not seen it yet (or Who has not seen or confirmed it yet).
  2. The list names everyone behind: not seen or seen, not confirmed.
  3. Nudge sends them a reminder notification. One nudge per message every 24 hours.

Seeing these confirmations requires the See read receipts permission. Players and parents don’t see who has read their own messages.

strivn prepares messages from your data, at three moments: Match closed (the result, scorers, playing time), Coming week (the week’s schedule) and Test results (a private message to each player tested). Nothing is sent without your approval.

  1. The banner strivn drafts await your approval, at the top of Messages, opens the strivn drafts.
  2. Review each draft. Edit the text lets you adjust it.
  3. Publish sends it into its conversation; Dismiss discards it. Publish the N drafts sends a whole group, each draft into its own conversation.

A draft expires after 14 days. If the data has changed since it was written, strivn flags it and asks for confirmation before publishing.

The More actions menu (⋯), in the bar that appears when you hover over a message (on a phone: Message actions), offers, depending on the channel:

  • Pin / Unpin: the message stays at the top of the thread. Three pinned messages at most per conversation.
  • Hide: the message disappears for all members. Only in the Team channel and event channels.
  • Highlight (email): for your own messages, with no health data; the message is marked Important and sent by email.
  • Delete: the author removes their own message.

A player or a parent can Report to staff a message: the team’s staff receive a notification. A hidden or deleted message stays in an audit log; in a conversation that includes a minor, no message is erased, except on a legal erasure request (GDPR).

A private conversation or an event’s can be deleted for all its members:

  1. Open the conversation, then More actions (⋯) at the top of the thread.
  2. Click Delete conversation and confirm.

It disappears from everyone’s messaging. A deleted event conversation doesn’t reopen for that event: call-ups keep going out by notification. The Team and Staff channels belong to the team and can’t be deleted. The messages stay in the audit log.

What is postedWho gets a notification
A staff message in the Team channel or an event channelAll members, except the author
A message from a player or a parent in those channelsThe channel’s staff; never the other players or other parents
A message in a private conversationAll its members, except the author
A message in the Staff channelAll staff, except the author
A nudgeThose who haven’t seen, or haven’t confirmed, the message

A notification for a private conversation, the Staff channel or a message carrying health data doesn’t show the text on the lock screen: only the team name and “New message”. For players and parents, see Messages in the app.

Three permissions are set per staff member, in Staff → Permissions:

PermissionWhat it opensDefault
Post in channelsWrite in the team channel and in event channelsCoaching roles; not the scout or the delegate
See read receiptsKnow who has read a message and who has confirmed itCoaching roles; not the scout or the delegate
Assistant reading of conversationsThis member’s assistant reads the channels the member belongs toNobody, until the administrator grants it

Any staff member writes in the Staff channel and in their own private conversations.

The assistant lists your conversations, and sees who hasn’t read your messages and which drafts are pending. It also proposes, always for your approval: publishing a message (“post in the team channel that Thursday’s training is moved to 7 pm”), opening a private conversation, publishing or dismissing drafts, nudging, pinning, reacting to a message, highlighting or deleting a conversation (“delete the conversation with Lucas”).

Reading the content of messages requires the Assistant reading of conversations permission. The conversation then warns all its members: “A staff member’s AI assistant can read this channel.”
